School Open House Marketing: How to Turn Visits Into Applications

A school open house works when it ends in submitted applications. Hold it before your application deadline, promote it to families in your enrollment area three to four weeks ahead, confirm every RSVP fast, help families apply before they leave, and follow up within a day with everyone who didn't. In-person visits still matter: among parents who enrolled a child in a new school, 43% visited schools in person and 31% attended open houses or tours (National School Choice Awareness Foundation, 2026).

Do school open houses still matter?

Yes. Visits are one of the main ways parents decide.

What this means. The 31% who searched but never enrolled are the reason open houses matter. A family that visits and leaves without applying is a family a school already paid to attract. The open house's job is to turn that visit into a submitted application.

When should a school hold an open house?

Before the application deadline, not after it.

  1. Find your deadline first. In New York, the application date that matters is April 1. Many Texas networks hold lotteries in February. Arizona's Great Hearts runs open enrollment from November 2 to December 31, 2026. Albuquerque charters often hold lotteries in the spring. See Charter School Lottery and Application Timeline.
  2. Hold a series, not one event: one in November, as families start comparing schools; one in January, after the holidays; and one two to three weeks before your deadline, for families who need a final push.
  3. Offer evening and weekend times. Working parents can't come at 10 AM on a Tuesday.
  4. Offer a virtual option. 74% of parents told Niche that virtual tours and events influence their decision.

How do you fill a school open house?

  1. Start promoting three to four weeks ahead. Ads to parents in your enrollment area, a page on your website with the RSVP form, and posts from current families.
  2. Advertise in the right months. Across 20 Taylor Wiz charter school accounts, a submitted application cost $103 in Meta ad spend from October through July and $247 in September. Open houses from November through spring fall in the lower-cost months.
  3. Keep the RSVP form short: parent name, phone, email, student's grade, and language preference.
  4. Confirm every RSVP within 15 minutes during business hours. A call or text from a person, with the date, time, address, and parking.
  5. Send reminders the day before and two hours before.
  6. Promote in the languages your families speak. Our outreach team is bilingual.

Every RSVP is a lead. Treat it with the same speed as any other inquiry. See Parent Outreach.

What should happen at the open house?

  1. Make applying part of the event. Set up a table with devices and a staff member who helps families start and submit the application on the spot.
  2. Show the school working. Classrooms, student work, and teachers. Let students lead part of the tour.
  3. Put current parents in the room. Families trust other families.
  4. Answer the questions families actually ask, accurately: how the lottery works, the application deadline, transportation, schedule, and, for private schools, tuition and scholarship programs.
  5. Collect a sign-in from every family, including walk-ins, so no one is missed in follow-up.
  6. Don't promise a seat. If your school admits by lottery, say "apply by the deadline," not "reserve your spot." See Charter School Advertising Compliance.
  7. Get photo consent before using any open house photo of a student in an ad.

What should happen after the open house?

Follow up within a day, sorted by what each family did.

FamilyFollow-up within 24 hours
Attended and submitted an applicationThank them; tell them what happens next and when
Attended and started but didn't finishCall to help finish; send the link to their saved application
Attended and didn't startCall to answer questions; send the application link and the deadline
RSVP'd and didn't comeCall or text; invite them to the next open house or a private tour

Keep calling until each family applies or says no. The open house only pays off if follow-up happens.

How do you measure an open house?

  1. RSVPs: how many families signed up.
  2. Attendance: how many came, as a share of RSVPs.
  3. Applications from attendees: how many attending families submitted an application within two weeks.
  4. Cost per submitted application: the ad spend for the event divided by the applications it produced.

Compare each open house with the last one. Change one thing at a time: the day, the time, the promotion, or the follow-up.
